All divers should have an emergency medical/travel insurance that will cover the cost of medical, repatriation, etc., but if the accident is serious enough to keep them off work for a long period, this type of plan will not assist with the loss of income. Some divers may have taken an Accident, Sickness and Unemployment (ASU) cover to run alongside their mortgage or loans/credit cards - but these are usually short term cover and diving activities may not even be covered.
Wearing another of his ‘hats’, one of the Directors of RescuEAN has found a valuable Accident and Income Protection Plan that does not increase premiums for anyone due to occupation, gender, being a smoker or, more importantly, for their love of diving. This is an ideal plan for UK based sport or Professional divers /Instructors wishing to secure their income following a serious accident or illness caused through diving or not - right up to their normal retirement date. The plan is also ideal for anyone with a high risk occupation or with any other hazardous pursuit.
Under this plan, if you are between 16 and 60 years of age, you can protect up to 60% of your declared annual earnings - whether you are employed on a salary or self-employed taking income and dividends. Plans are underwritten for health issues but there is NO underwriting for occupation or diving. Cover extends whist you are abroad on business or pleasure (up to 6 months per year) - so will cover those student training dive trips/short term training contracts in warmer waters...
